Course 15 (Duration 1 day)
Gymnastics at Key Stage 1
Course Objectives:
- to develop knowledge and understanding of movement principles,
skills and lesson material
- to develop and explore a progressive Scheme of Work
- to develop appropriate teaching and learning strategies
This course will develop and extend the knowledge
and understanding of teachers in Key Stage 1 and build confidence
in their
delivery of gymnastic lessons. It will examine and explore
development
and progression through a whole school schematic approach,
demystify
and thoroughly explore apparatus work and provide a clear
framework for delivery of gymnastics in the National Curriculum.
The teaching of basic gymnastic skills in
a progressive and safe way and the
principles involved in sequence-construction will be addressed
as appropriate. Expected learning outcomes will be identified
in detail for the end of year 2 to more accurately identify
Attainment
Target Levels. Issues of differentiation and inclusion
will be addressed throughout the course.
As part of the course each participant will receive a detailed
and comprehensive teaching manual and scheme of work for Key
Stage 1 Gymnastics (Click
here to view the manual).
Course members should dress appropriately for some practical participation.
(If required, this course will also show how the TOP Gymnastics
material can be used and integrated into the Schemes of Work.)
Target Audience:
- Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Teachers
- Physical Education Co-ordinators
- School Sport Co-ordinators

Gymnastics at Key Stage 2
Course Objectives:
- to develop knowledge and understanding of movement principles,
skills and lesson material for Key Stage 2
- to develop and explore a progressive Scheme of Work
- to develop appropriate teaching and learning strategies
This course will develop and extend the knowledge and understanding
of teachers in Key Stage 2 and build confidence in their
delivery of gymnastics in the curriculum. It will examine
and encourage
progression and development through a whole-school schematic
approach. The progressive and safe teaching of basic gymnastic
skills will
be explored, both individually and in pairs and the principles
of sequence-construction will be addressed and developed
as appropriate. All aspects of apparatus work will be explored
and explained (i.e.
handling, organisation, siting and use) and expected minimum
standards of performance will be identified in detail at
the
end of years
4 and 6 to help teachers make accurate judgements about
Attainment Target Levels. Issues of differentiation and inclusion
will
be addressed throughout the day.
As part of the course each participant will receive a detailed
and comprehensive teaching manual and scheme of work for Key Stage
2 Gymnastics (Click here to
view the manual).
Course members should dress appropriately for some practical participation.
(If required, this course will also show how the TOP Gymnastics
material can be used and integrated into the Schemes of Work.)
Target Audience:
- Key Stage 2 Teachers
- Physical Education Co-ordinators
- School Sport Co-ordinators

Gymnastics at Key Stages 1 and 2
Course Objectives:
- to develop knowledge and understanding of movement principles,
skills and lesson material for Key Stages 1 and 2
- to develop and explore a progressive Scheme of Work for the
Primary school
- to develop appropriate teaching and learning strategies
This course will develop and extend the knowledge and understanding
of teachers in Key Stages 1 and 2 and build confidence in their
delivery of gymnastic lessons. It will examine and encourage
progression and development from Reception through to Year
6 using a whole
school schematic approach. The progressive and safe teaching
of basic gymnastic skills will be explored, in both individual
and
pair situations. Combined with an understanding of principles
of movement, sequence-construction and extension will be developed
both on floor and apparatus. This will equip practitioners
to encourage
creativity and build in complexity as pupils’ progress
through the school. The course will also thoroughly explore
apparatus work
in a way which will enable pupils to build confidence and develop
skills. Expected minimum standards of performance
will be identified in detail at the end of years 2, 4 and
6 to help teachers make more
accurate judgements of attainment target levels. Issues of differentiation
and inclusion will be addressed.
As part of the course each participant will receive detailed and
comprehensive teaching manuals and schemes of work for Key Stages
1 and 2 Gymnastics(Click to view the appropriate manual - Key
Stage 1 / Key
Stage 2).
Course members should dress appropriately for some practical participation.
(If required, this course will also show how the TOP Gymnastics
material can be used and integrated into the Schemes of Work.)
Target Audience:
- Key Stages 1 and 2 Teachers
- Physical Education Co-ordinators
- School Sport Co-ordinators

Gymnastics at Key Stages 3 and 4
Course Objectives:
- to develop knowledge and understanding of individual, pair
and group gymnastics at Key
Stage 3 and Key Stage 4
- to enable teachers to develop stimulating and progressive
schemes of work and use apparatus
effectively and imaginatively
Whilst individual skill learning should always continue to be
a major factor in the teaching of gymnastics, it is also recognised
that skill adaptation, refinement and development in 2’s,
3’s and groups will provide more interesting and exciting
work at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
This course will analyse and clarify principles of movement and
provide teachers with the materials and extension activities to
motivate pupils at Key Stage 3 & 4. Practical application and
discussion will also develop knowledge and understanding across
the four strands of the National Curriculum:
1 acquiring and developing gymnastic skills
2 selecting and applying gymnastic skills and compositional ideas
3 evaluating and improving performance
4 knowledge and understanding of fitness and health in relation
to gymnastics
Core skills and essential principles of movement and sequence construction
will be identified in some detail. These will be incorporated into
more complex sequences and developed, adapted and refined for use
on both floor and apparatus. Stimulating units of work will be
explored and Minimum Expected Standards of performance will be
identified in detail to enable teachers more accurately to define
the Attainment Target level of their pupils. Course members should
dress appropriately for some practical participation.
As part of the course each participant will receive detailed and
comprehensive teaching manuals and schemes of work for Key Stages
3 and 4 Gymnastics (click here
to view).
Target Audience:
- (Middle) Secondary Teachers of Physical Education
- Physical Education Heads of Department
