Dance at Key Stages 1 & 2
Course Objectives:
- to enable Key Stage 1 and 2 teachers of dance to teach their
classes with confidence
- to develop knowledge and understanding of principles of movement
and material content
- to develop appropriate teaching and learning techniques and
strategies
- to provide a complete scheme of work for Key Stages 1 and 2
using 89 dances. Through 23 lesson plans utilising over 90 pages
of support material and 244 pieces of music on 9 CD’s.
This course will develop and extend the knowledge, understanding
and confidence of teachers in the delivery of dance in the Physical
Education curriculum.
There will be practical and definite guidance on planning, teaching
styles and strategies, choosing and using stimuli for dance, and
suggestions for additional forms of accompaniment. The movement
material or language of dance will be explained and explored practically
using dances or sections of dances from the schemes.
The essential aspects of composing, performing and appreciating
will be examined and experienced. Dance activities appropriate
for each age group will be linked to National Curriculum requirements
and Minimum Expected standard of performance will be identified.
The provision of Reception and Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2 schemes
of work in teaching manuals is linked and central to the course.
The rich provision of material and musical content will be used
and developed to illustrate principles of movement and the language
of dance. Participants will be made familiar with their contents
and how to use them to their best advantage.
The Val Sabin teaching manuals are regarded as the most comprehensive
and user-friendly teaching manuals.
The specially – composed music on 3 CDs for Reception Key
Stage 1 and 6 CDs for Key Stage 2 includes a range of cultural
rhythms, pop, reggae, rap, ethereal, lyrical, sound effects, music
that tells a story and is presented in a user-friendly way.. Each
unit of work (12 units for Reception & Key Stage 1, and 19
unites for Key Stage 2) contains between 6 and 10 lesson plans
which progress and develop the 89 dances. The dances arise and
are linked to a wide range of stimuli including the tactile, characters,
masks, story, legend, poems, words, music, sport, natural occurrences,
forms of greeting social, moral and environmental issues etc.

Course 23 (Duration – 1 day)
Dance at Key Stage 1
Course Objectives:
- to enable teachers with limited experience of dance at KS1
to teach their classes with confidence
- to develop knowledge and understanding of principles of movement
and material content
- to be able to make up a dance
- to develop appropriate teaching and learning strategies
This course will develop and extend the knowledge and understanding
of those teachers with limited dance experience, and will build
their confidence in delivery of dance in the curriculum. The
basic core skills and principles of movement will be explained
and experienced
and course participants will learn the simple progressive stages
involved in “how to make up a dance”! Appropriate
and varied stimuli will be introduced and a range of sounds,
percussion
instruments and musical accompaniments will be explored. Different
teaching and learning strategies will be introduced and addressed
within an inclusive environment. Several specific dances and
units of work will be experienced practically so participants
should
dress appropriately. Minimum expected standards of performance will be discussed in
detail for the end of year 2 and methods of assessment will be
addressed. A detailed progressive and developmental scheme of work
complete with 3 CDs of music will be available as part of the course.

Course Objectives:
- to enable teachers with limited experience of dance at KS2

and material content
- to be able to make up a dance
- to develop appropriate teaching and learning strategies
This course will develop and extend the knowledge and understanding
of those teachers with limited dance experience, and will build
their confidence in delivery of dance in the curriculum. The
basic core skills and principles of movement will be explained
and experienced
and course participants will learn the simple progressive stages
involved in “how to make up a dance”! Appropriate
and varied stimuli will be introduced and a range of sounds,
percussion
instruments and musical accompaniments will be explored. Different
teaching and learning strategies will be introduced and addressed
within an inclusive environment. Several specific dances and
units of work will be experienced practically so participants
should
dress appropriately. Minimum expected standards of performance will be discussed in
detail for the end of year 4 and year 6 and methods of assessment
will be addressed. A progressive and developmental scheme of work
complete with 6 CDs of music will be available as part of the course.
