'The Nine Story Journeys' is both a system and a sequence that facilitates pupils to become motivated, excited and skilled writers. For each of the story journeys, resources and support are provided in the following ways.
In the teacher handbook, short term planning is outlined that underpins a logical teaching sequence and reflects approaches to the teaching of writing promoted by the Primary National Strategy for Literacy.
The Nine Story Journeys is designed to make explicit a 'hands on' layering approach to developing writing. Each pupil is encouraged to walk The Journey of the main character and to gather ideas orally and in writing. These are then further developed and redrafted to provide a comprehensive route to preparation prior to the challenge of writing.
Each story journey comes with specific textual features which then form a structure for assessment. It allows pupils to be guided by the criteria as well as provide guidance for self and peer assessment.
The Nine Story Journey approach supports teachers to teach writing as it is a visual categorisation system that enables pupils to see the shapes of stories. It encourages empathetic writing and ensures that at the construction stage, pupils' work is both in depth and of quality. The physical dimension to building up a story motivates all learners and helps them connect with the nuts and bolts of story building. The Nine Story Journeys also is an excellent analysis system for reading as it provides frameworks through which stories can be deconstructed and vital elements recognised.
'The Nine Story Journeys' material includes a complete tool kit to deliver high quality writing lessons. Every journey is exemplified through an illustrated story that can be used on the interactive whiteboard. Each narrative teaching sequence builds in time to immerse pupils in the writing and composition at all levels. Most critically it engages them intensively with the writing process.
The materials provide many layers of resources and support including word banks, visual hooks, exemplar text and criteria lists and assessment guidance.
