The complete Primary School Gymnastics Scheme comprises of two comprehensive and user-friendly teaching manuals. The Reception and Key Stage 1 manual (4-7 years) contains 72 lesson plans in 12 units of work, teaching cards, 32 tracks of music and a self assessment wall display on a CD. The Key Stage 2 manual (7-11 Years) contains 96 lesson plans in 16 units of work, teaching cards, 38 tracks of music and a self assessment wall display on a CD.
These manuals follow the same comprehensive and detailed format of the Val Sabin Primary School Dance, Games and Athletics manuals. They follow the same structure of teaching guide, teaching material and skill-development. The skill development section is particularly comprehensive. With each skill, common faults and remedies are identified, along with safe methods of teaching lead-up skills in a class of 30 children.
All the lessons are planned as part of a progressive and developmental whole-school scheme of work, and allow opportunities for using a range of teaching strategies, individual, pair and group work, independent learning and self and peer assessment.
There is also in the introduction, a break-down of International Education levels and ages to increase it's user-friendliness in countries other than the UK.
A fully comprehensive teaching manual full of interesting and exciting lesson material, presented in a progressive and developmental structure, enables school gymnastics to be easily and fully implemented for Key Stages 3 & 4 of the National Curriculum. It provides the "what", "how" and "when" to teach gymnastics in a stimulating, practical and detailed manner and follows on naturally from the author's teaching manual for Key Stages 1 & 2. Lesson structure, principles of teaching gymnastics to this age group, useful techniques for making the most of available apparatus and a simple meaningful system for assessment and recording are some of the essential areas covered.
The major part of the manual comprises lesson material in 11 very detailed and progressive units of work organised in a way which enables the teacher to select the most appropriate phases of development or difficulty to match the expertise of a class.
There are masters of 160 original work cards to aid extension and differentiation in the class situation and a comprehensive section on how to teach individual gymnastic skills by breaking them down into progessive stages.
