Coaches in the Curriculum - Games

There are many more sports coaches working in schools, taking lunch-time and after-school clubs. Increasingly, however, coaches are also being asked to take lessons in the curriculum - and Physical Education Lessons are a different matter altogether!

In order to create a recognised standard and to ensure that all coaches teaching PE lessons are not only familiar with curriculum-based terminology, teaching styles and strategies which are fully inclusive but also have structured lesson plans from which to work and utilise in different ways.

We have used the successful Val Sabin Primary School Games manual KS2 (8-11 years), sub-divided the families of games and written the teaching guide to include essential tips for coaches.

The reason for sub-dividing and creating separate manuals for Invasion; Net/Court/Wall; striking and fielding games is to ensure that coaches of specific types of games have a personal copy relevant to their area of specialism including the Expected Minimum Standards of performance necessary to achieve the appropriate attainment target levels.

Most coaches now being employed by Primary Schools are increasingly being asked to take games lessons which are not in their specific line of expertise, so the Val Sabin Primary Schools Games scheme has also been adapted for coaches so they can have their personal copy of manuals using a true multi skilled approach. This will ensure the confident, progressive and developmental teaching of core skills in all the 'families' of games. These two manuals are also included as part of the Coaches in the Curriculum training day for Games.
