"Lets Rock and Roll" Basket
Purpose:
The purpose of using the equipment in this basket is to develop the fine motor skill used in holding and grasping equipment, hand eye control and to engage children in rolling, following and collecting small equipment.
Contents for the baskets
(Suggestions only- extend and develop as necessary)
Cylinder shaped- kitchen utensil holder
Weaved balls - different sizes
Gourds
Pompons- different sizes/colours
Fir cones - variety
Baby’s wooden rattle
Candles
Apples
Lemons
Egg-cups - stainless steels spirals
Woven circular coasters
Shaving brushes Rubber bungs
Carrier bag holder (small wooden roller)
Wooden rings
Ensure the basket is full and this encourages children to explore, seek and find items using their curiosity.
Activity instructions
- Identify area where basket is to be located, ensure the location is suitable-not close to any exits or entrances or across thoroughfares.
- Invite the children to the area - whether it be a small group or targeted children
- Try not to be intrusive as the children explore the basket contents
- Observe as the contents evolve and the children begin to explore the items
Note the following :
Items that children favour and why.
Patterns of play that appear to be replicated.
How children use their mobility with the objects.
Children’s communication strategies.
Individual children’s fine motor development.
Individual children’s gross motor movement.
Practitioner’s role is to ensure the following:
- The resources are appropriate, safe and hygienic
- Observations are made and recorded - and used to inform practice
- Intervention is at a minimum
- Follow-on actions to develop the activity further are timely
- Spontaneous play is supported
Tummy Time
Children on tummes are encouraged to lift heads, wiggle and move by stimulating their interest e.g. presenting different balls/toys to grasp or push away and follow.

Move and Groove
Children must experience the crawling stage of movement therefore they should be encouraged to move after toys balls, and be stimulated to move by curiosity. They crawl and then pull up to standing. On feet, they are encouraged to bob up and down, twist and “groove”.
