| The After-School Clubs manual comprises a complete set of 45 progressive and developmental session plans. There are 3 CD’s which accompany the manual. They contain 76 pieces of music and the Action Kids warm-up and calm-down songs.
There are three sections to the manual:-
Section 1 – Focus on activities leading to gymnastics.
Section 2 – Focus on activities leading to dance.
Section 3 – Focus on activities leading to games.
It will be noted that each section has a focus of one type of activity, but also involves a wide variety of activities from other areas, (e.g. gymnastics sessions contain two or three activities which develop mobility, strength and suppleness and the remaining ones encourage exploration of small equipment, music and parachute games.)
It can be seen therefore that whilst the core activities form a progressive and developmental scheme, the sessions are bright, varied and FUN for the participants.
The presentation of the session plans is as follows:-
(i) Each session is constructed to contain....
(a) “Trail” activities, which encourage free play and allow time for children to engage in activity as soon as they arrive.
(b) The Action Kids Warm – Up Song and two Warm – Up activities.
(c) The main activities for the session, the last ones always being parachute games.
(d) The Calm – Down activity and the Action Kids Calm – Down Song.
(ii) Each session structure is presented on one side of an A4 page with a key in the left – hand column that identifies Action Kids Songs, core activities, development activities or parachute games
.
(iii) The right – hand column contains information about the equipment to be used and specific references for the music.
(iv) On the reverse of the session plan the core activities are identified in considerable detail taking the form of:-
(a) Warm – Up
(b) Main activity
(c) Main activity progression
(d) Calm Down
(e) The benefits of the activity for the child.
Reference to this side gives you very detailed procedures and instructions for the delivery of each core activity.
